FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Brockport scored in the 37th minute, then hung on the rest of the way for a 1-0 SUNYAC women's soccer win Saturday over Fredonia.
Katie Scott completed a three-way play for the lone goal while goalkeeper Catherine Eliasson came up with several goal-saving stops among her 12 saves.
The loss dropped the Blue Devils to 1-8-0 overall and 0-2-0 in the conference. Brockport improved to 5-3-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the SUNYAC.
Brockport's scoring play moved from left to right -- a short cross by Courtney Szczesniak to Christina Leonardo in the center of the field, followed by a longer cross to Scott, whose shot from the right wing dribbled into the far corner of the net.
The Blue Devils nearly countered second later on a shot from the box by
Alexis Moreland (Newfane, N.Y.), but the ball deflected off the cross bar.
It was the first on several near-misses by Fredonia. A header by Moreland just before halftime was deflected away by a leaping Eliasson. The Brockport goalkeeper also deflected two tries by
Ally Tatro (Fairport, N.Y.), first in the 53rd minute and again in the 67th minute. Fredonia's last-best scoring chance was a hurried shot by Moreland which skidded wide with just under 10 minutes left.
Moreland finished with seven shots while Tatro and
Kristie Kleine (Cazenovia, N.Y.) had three shots each as Fredonia outshot Brockport, 20-16. The Blue Devils also had an advantage in corner kicks, 11-5.
Blue Devil freshman goalkeeper
Kendall Owczarzak (Depew, N.Y.) was credited with seven saves.
