OT loss for Devils, Behrend claims crown

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- A blast by Kristin Thomas early in the second overtime lifted Grove City over Fredonia, 3-2, on the final day of the rain-drenched Blue Devil Clarion Hotel Classic at University Stadium.

Receiving a long midfield cross from Megan Van Kirk, Thomas got behind the Fredonia defense and drilled a shot past freshman goalkeeper Kendall Owczarzak (Depew, N.Y.) in the 104th minute.

The loss dropped Fredonia to 1-4 while Grove City improved to 3-1-1 and claimed third place in the four-team field. Penn State Behrend won the Classic with its 2-1 victory over Oswego State on the adjoining turf field.

Blue Devil junior Alexis Moreland (Newfane, N.Y.) scored her sixth goal of the season -- at one each in all five games so far -- while junior Maggie Papia (Williamsville, N.Y.) scored her first collegiate goal.

Van Kirk and Sammie Wild had Behrend's other goals and goalkeeper Nicole Lapia made six saves. Owczarzak was credited with eight saves in the Fredonia net.

Moreland opened the scoring in the 43rd minute when she tapped a shot past Lapia following a cross into the box by Audrey Yokopovich (Webster, N.Y.).

Wild evened the score, 1-1, in the 47th minute on a short set-up from Katherine Kouzelos, and Van Kirk put Grove City on top 2-1 with an assist to Thomas in the 85th minute.

Just over a minute later, Papia scored a game-tying tally when her long shot from between midfield and the 20-yard line deflected off Lapia and into the net. Both goalkeepers had trouble handling the wet ball as conditions worsened throughout the second half.

Grove City place Thomas and Jordyn White on the Classic all-tournament team while Moreland and Morgan Marshall (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) were Fredonia's selections.

The Blue Devils wore teal colored tops to commemorate the struggle against ovarian cancer on what was deemed Fredonia Soccer Cancer Awareness Day.

Next up for the Blue Devils is a Tuesday night visit from William Smith, a 2014 NCAA tournament team and recent Division III national champ. Game time is 7 p.m.
