FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The
stage is set for the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament, which is now schduled for 11 a.m on Sunday (NCAA Championship Guide).The Denison Big Red (11-6) will travel to Fredonia to take on the No. 17 Blue Devils (15-3).
The Blue Devils, under first-year head coach
Amy Simon, are making their third NCAA appearance in the last four years. In 2012 they lost to St. John Fisher in overtime at University Stadium 9-8, and in 2014 defeated RPI 9-8 before eventually falling to national finalist Trinity (Conn).
Denison is appearing in the NCAA tournament for the 17th time in program history. Now under the guidance of head coach Amanda Daniels, the Big Red are the campions of the North Coast Athletic Conference. Their last NCAA victory came in 2012 as they defeated Adrian, 11-10 in double overtime.
Two Blue Devil players are chasing school records in the post-season.
Katie Kleine (Cazenovia, N.Y. / Cazenovia), with 280 career points, is six short of the school record which is currently held by Simon.
Marissa Cussins (Corning, N.Y. / Corning-Painted Post West), currently with 82 points on the season, needs four more to tie Kleine's school record of 86 (2012).
The winner of Sunday's game will advance to the third round of the tournament, scheduled for Saturday, May 16.
