Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

On to SUNYAC title game

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- No. 17 ranked Fredonia advanced to the SUNYAC Women's Lacrosse championship game for the first time with an 8-3 semifinal win Friday over No. 18 Geneseo.

The Blue Devils (15-2) will meet No. 1 seed and tournament host Cortland for the conference title at noon Saturday. The Red Dragons, ranked No. 2 in the nation by the IWLCA, advanced with a 21-8 semifinal victory over Brockport.

The Blue Devils also set a school record for wins in a season and virtually locked up a spot in the NCAA Division III Tournament next weekend. The selections will be announced Sunday at 9:30 a.m. in a NCAA webcast.

With Geneseo concentrating on Fredonia's high-scoring senior tandem of Katie Kleine (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia) and Marissa Cussins (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post West), sophomore attack Emily Polizzi (Rushville, N.Y./Marcus Whitman) stepped into the breach with a career-high five goals.

Kristie Kleine (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia), Shelby DePew (Macedon, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon), and Audrey Yokopovich (Webster, N.Y./Webster-Thomas) also had Fredonia goals. Meanwhile, Cussins and Katie Kleine were held to two assists and one assist, respectively.

Defensively, the three goals allowed were the fewest allowed by Fredonia in a playoff game. Freshman goalkeeper Nicole Burrows (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) was credited with seven saves, including several key stops during an important stretch of the first half.

She had help at the defefnsive end. The Blue Devils stopped Geneseo on all five of its free-position shots. The Blue Knights (14-3) were scoreless in the second half before finally breaking through with 1:15 left in the game.

The Blue Devils never trailed Friday. Polizzi put her team on top, 1-0, before Katey Hart scored her first of three Geneseo goals to forge a 1-1 tie. Kristie Kleine put the Blue Devils ahead 2-1 off a free-position shot, followed by DePew's goal for a 3-1 Fredonia lead. Hart then made it 3-2 before momentum turned for good toward Fredonia in the.final minute of the first half.

Yokopovich put the Blue Devils in the lead, 4-2, with a spin move and short shot and goal with 22 seconds left in the half. The Blue Devils won the ensuing draw control, hurried the ball upfield, and -- after a foul inside the 8-meter -- took a 5-2 lead when Polizzi fired a hard one-timer into the upper portion of the net with 5 seconds remaining.

Polizzi then scored three straight goals in the second half to secure Fredonia's first-ever SUNYAC Tournament win. They were 0-3 in previous SUNYAC appearances, including a 12-9 semifinal loss to Geneseo in 2014.

Field stat leaders Friday were Yokopovich with four ground balls and Yokopovich, Polizzi, and the Kleines with two draw controls each. The two draws by Katie Kleine give her 184 in her career, one short of the school record held by head coach Amy Simon.
