Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Devils unable to end Cortland streak

CORTLAND, N.Y. --- For the 17th straight season, Cortland is the SUNYAC Women's Lacrosse title holder.

The Red Dragons (17-1) won the 2015 championship Saturday with a 15-6 win over Fredonia. The Blue Devils (15-3) were making their first SUNYAC championship game appearance.

Kristie Kleine (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia) led the Fredonia offense with three goals on four shots, using her speed to run through Cortland defenders. One of her goals came after taking a draw control and racing upfield to cut the Cortland lead to 8-4 early in the second half. The Red Dragons, who closed out the first half with a 5-0 run, answered with the next three goals.

Marissa Cussins (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post West), Shelby DePew (Macedon, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon), and Emily Polizzi (Rushville, N.Y./Marcus Whitman) had one goal each. The goal by Cussins --- her team-leading 56th of the season -- gave Fredonia its only lead, 1-0, just 1:34 into the contest.

Kristie Kleine, Polizzi, and Katie Kleine (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia) were named to the SUNYAC All-Tournament team. In the process, Katie Kleine collected three draw controls to become Fredonia's all-time leader in the category with 187. Former teammate and current Blue Devil head coach Amy Simon had 185 draw controls in her collegiate career. She also had one assist to add to her school-record total -- now at 130.

Field leaders included Audrey Yokopovich (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas), who also had three draw controls. Kristie Kleine and Polizzi were credited with two caused turnovers each. Fredonia had three players with two groundballs each: Cussins, Katie Miller (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg), and Lauren Metz (Williamsville, N.Y./Lancaster).

Blue Devil freshman goalkeeper Nicole Burrows (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) was credited with eight saves. Kristen Ohberg had four goals and SUNYAC Tournament MVP Tara Monaghan and Nicole Bello two each for Cortland, while winning goalkeeper Jaclyn Beshlian made five saves.

By winning, the Red Dragons -- ranked No. 2 in the country -- earned the SUNYAC's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Tournament which begins next weekend. The Blue Devils -- ranked No. 17 -- are also expected to get an invitation. The entire field will be announced during a webcast on NCAA.com at 9:30 p.m. Sunday.
