FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia took both ends of a SUNYAC doubleheader against Potsdam on Friday at Blue Devil Field, 4-0 and 5-1. The Blue Devils improved to 4-0 in the conference and 7-8 overall. It's their best conference start since going 6-0 to open the 2011 season.
Kelsey Gannett (Endwell, N.Y./Union-Endicott) tossed a complete-game two-hitter in the opener, retiring the last 18 battters she facedÂ
Megan Degroat (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall) and
Aldyn Carlson (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk) combined for a seven-hitter with no walks in the nightcap. Degroat earned the win with four scoreless innings of relief.
The Blue Devils were the visiting team in both games because of a site switch. Using their first-up status to the optimum, they jumped to leads in the first inning of both games.
In fact, they did all their scoring in the first inning of Game 1. A walk to
Kate Nicholson (Heuvelton, N.Y./Heuvelton) and a single by
Nikki Lent (Yaphank, N.Y./Longwood) got a inning started.
Alyssa Morgan (Homer, N.Y./Homer) drove in one run and an error led to another run.Â
Cherise Gunnell (Falconer, N.Y./Falconer) then walked, followed by an RBI single by
Jess Lauck (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West). An infield RBI groundout by
Madeline Medina (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) plated the fourth run.
Gannett had eight strikeouts in the first three innings and had at least one strikeout in every inning. She finished with 12 strikeouts, tied for the fourth-best single game by a Blue Devil pitcher. She improved to 3-2 this season. Carina Chirinko (1-5) was the losing pitcher.
In the nightcap,
Lindsey Forness (Allegany, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) cracked a one-out double to get a three-run first inning going for the Blue Devils. Morgan followed with a single, and Lauck and
Maggie Paras (Florida, N.Y./S.S. Seward) with two-out RBI singles.
The Blue Devils added single runs in the second and fifth innings.
Maddy Stavish (Olean, N.Y./Olean) led off the second with a single and came around to score on the strength of two wild piches. Lent had a one-out double in the fifth and scored on a single by Forness, her third straight hit of the game and fourth straight hit over two games.
Carlson got through the first two innings unscathed before allowing a run on four hits in the Potsdam third inning. Degroat came out to pitch the fourth and faced two batters over the minimum over the next four innings. She gave up two hits, struck out two, and improved to 3-3 this spring. Jaime Hoskins (1-5) took the loss.
The Blue Devils are scheduled to return to action 11 a.m. Saturday against Plattsburgh at Blue Devil Field.
