Early deficit too much for Blue Devils

OSWEGO, N.Y. ---- The Fredonia baseball team kicked off a weekend road trip with an 11-4 loss to Oswego.

The Lakers took an early advantage scoring 10 runs in the first four innings.

Following a Robert Donnelly RBI double Oswego scored three more runs behind RBI base hits from Wes Randall, Brian Hamilton, and Kyle Liner.  When the dust settled the Lakers had scored five times in the third extending the lead to six.

Oswego added four more runs in the fourth behind RBI extra-base hits from Myles Kutscher and Jordan Giller. Liner recorded his second RBI of the afternoon as well. At the end of the fourth Oswego led 10-0.

The Blue Devils trimmed the lead to nine in the fifth on a Ricky Mendiola (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) RBI single.

Fredonia added three more runs in the sixth inning when Dan Cecilia (Utica, N.Y./Whitesboro) scored on an errant throw from second. Vincent Sherman (North Collins, N.Y./North Collins) scored on a wild pitch. The Blue Devils scored their final run when Michael Prentice (West Seneca, N.Y./St. Francis) scored as Quinn Danahy (Buffalo, N.Y./Bishop Timon) grounded out to second.

The Lakers added one more run in the seventh leading to the eventual final score of 11-4.

Ciro Frontale (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) finished the day three for five with an RBI. Sherman and Cecilia each went two for four with a run scored while Erik Krohl (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) finished two for three.

Zachary Jordon took the loss falling to 4-2 while Brendyn Karinchak improved to 6-2. Matt Wilhelm (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst) and Kyle Smith (Scottsville, N.Y./Wheatland-Chili) relieved Jordon allowing just one run over four and two-thirds innings.

The Blue Devils fell to 9-14 (4-7 SUNYAC) while Oswego improved to 21-6 (12-2 SUNYAC).

The final two games of the series will be played Saturday in Oswego. First pitch is slated for noon.
