ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia women's lacrosse team had six goals from
Marissa Cussins (Corning, N.Y. / Corning - Painted Post West ) and four from
Audrey Yokopovich (Webster, N.Y. / Webster Thomas) as the Blue Devils downed the Elmira Soaring Eagles in a non-conference game, 16-9.
The Blue Devils went on a five-goal run early in the first half to take an 8-2 lead, but a 7-2 scoring run by the Soaring Eagles that lasted into the early portion of the second half would pull Elmira within one goal, 10-9.
The Fredonia defense shut down the Elmira attack for the remainder of the game however, holding the Soaring Eagles without a goal for the final 23 minutes of the game. Yokopovich and Cussins each had two goals during that time span, while
Shelby DePew (Macedon, N.Y. / Palmyra-Macedon) had one, to extend the Blue Devil lead to seven.
Kristie Kleine (Cazenovia, N.Y. / Cazenovia) had two goals, six ground balls, and two caused turnovers in the win, while
Katie Kleine (Cazenovia, N.Y. / Cazenovia) had eight of the eleven Blue Devil assists.
The Blue Devils outshot the Soaring Eagles, 31-18.
The team will travel down to New Paltz, N.Y. tonight to get ready to take on the Hawks in their fourth SUNYAC match-up on Saturday. Game time is at 1 p.m.
