Devils fall 6-5 to Plattsburgh

WINTERHAVEN, FL. --- The Fredonia baseball team fell 6-5 to Plattsburgh on Friday evening, dropping to 4-7 overall. Six losses have been by one run.

Plattsburgh scored in the first inning. After a single, walk and a deep fly to center put runners at first and third, Nick Lupo scored on a wild pitch.

Plattsburgh tacked on three in the fourth. Back-to-back walks to start the inning were followed by a Chris Pescetti RBI single. A throwing error allowed the second run to score and Pescetti to advance to third. A sacrifice fly plated Pescetti with the third run to give the Cardinals a 4-0 advantage.

The Blue Devils got on the board in the top of the fifth inning scoring five runs on five hits. Mike Carmody (Montgomery, N.Y. / Valley Central) and Kyle Sherman (North Collins, N.Y. / North Collins) started the inning with singles. Ryan Carmody's sacrifice bunt attempt ended in a base hit to load the bases. Ciro Frontale (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) then roped a two-run single. Mike Prentice followed with the fifth-straight hit to score Ryan Carmody and put runners at first and second with still no out.

Vincent Sherman laid down a perfect sacrifice attempt, which also resulted in a base hit to load the bases. Ricky Mendiola (Williamsville, N.Y. / Williamsville South) grounded out to score Frontale from third. Kenny Johnston hit a deep sacrifice fly to score Prentice and give the Devils a 5-4 lead.

The lead stood until the bottom of the eighth. Following a leadoff bloop single by Alex Rodriguez, Billy Rombauts was hit by a pitch in an attempt to bunt. Brandon Buska bunted the next pitch which was thrown into centerfield allowing a run to score and put runners at second and third.

The Devils then snuffed out a squeeze attempt by Lupo and tagged out Buska. Lupo struck out for the second out before Brian Latulipe ripped a hit for the second run of the inning to give Plattsburgh a 6-5 lead.

The Devils had a chance to tie the game in the ninth. Frontale doubled over the leftfielder's head with two out. Mike Prentice grounded out to third to end the game.

The Devils swung the bats well in the first few innings, but could not capitalize. After back-to-back singles in the first, Vincent Sherman smoked a ball to third that resulted in a line-drive double play. The Devils had a runner at third and one out in the second, but popped out to second base twice. A leadoff walk in the third was erased by a hard-hit double play ball by Frontale.

Thomas Morris (Syosset, N.Y. / Syosset) started on the hill for Fredonia going 3 1/3 innings, giving up four runs. He was relieved by Matt Wilhelm (Amherst, N.Y. / Amherst) who pitched 2 2/3 innings giving up one hit and worked his way out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth inning without allowing a score. Joe DiLeo (Buffalo, N.Y. / St. Joe's) started the seventh going 1 2/3 innings allowing four hits and striking out one and taking the loss. Bailey Gauthier (Syracuse, N.Y. / West Genesee) came in to strike out the only batter he faced.

Fredonia had 11 hits on the day led by Frontale who had three hits and two RBI. Prentice and Michael Carmody finished with two hits apiece.

Fredonia (4-7, 1-2 SUNYAC) will resume action Saturday in Auburndale, Florida as they take on Franklin and Marshall College.
