WINTERHAVEN, FL. --- The Fredonia baseball team continued it's spring trip Tuesday with a walk-off win and a 12-5 loss to Hamilton College.
The Blue Devils began the afternoon in dramatic fashion with a 7-6 victory in their last at bat. With the bases loaded and one in the bottom of the seventh
Ryan Carmody (Montgomery, N.Y./ Valley Central) lined a single over the head of the second baseman scoringÂ
Quinn Danahy (Buffalo, N.Y./Bishop Timon)Â with the game-winning run. All told, the Devils tallied four runs in the seventh to claim the win.
Down 5-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Devils plated three runs in the sixth to make it a 5-3 game. Hamilton added an insurance run in its half of the seventh to set the stage for Carmody.
Ben Senior (Angola, N.Y./Lakeshore) started for the Blue Devils and pitched two innings giving up three hits and two runs while striking out two. Freshman
Bailey Gauthier (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee)Â starter the third inning and tossed pitched four-plus innings allowing three runs and striking out two batters.
Kyle Smith (Scottsville, N.Y./Wheatland Chili) came into the game in the top of the seventh with runners on second and third with no outs. Smith struck out the first batter and allowed a sacrifice fly before getting the last batter to pop out to first. Smith was credited with his his first collegiate win.
The Blue Devils had 12 hits in game one.
Vincent Sherman (North Collins, N.Y./North Collins) had three hits and scored twice.
Ryan Carmody went three for five with the game-winning RBI.
Michael Carmody went two for four with three RBI including a two-run single in the top of the seventh which set up the walk-off win.
Five Blue Devil pitchers were used in Game 2, highlighted by
Jake Harford (Silver Creek, N.Y./Silver Creek) and
Michael Bessette (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Odyssey), both stiking out three in on inning each. Starter
Carl Wolf (Hilton, N.Y. / Hilton) took the loss.
The Blue Devils scored first in nightcap when Mike Prentice (West Seneca, N.Y./ St.Francis) grounded out scoring
Ryan Carmody from third. Hamilton responded by scoring the next eight runs.
Ryan Carmody and Sherman each added another hit. Freshmen
Derek Fie (Corning, N.Y./ Corning) and
Patrick Sheehan (West Seneca N.Y. / Orchard Park) each scored a run and had their first career hits.
The Continentals had 14 hits and were aided by two Blue Devil errors en route to the win.
After a day off Wednesday, the Blue Devils open SUNYAC play Thursday and Friday against rival Plattsburgh. Thursday's doubleheader will be played in Auburndale, Florida and first pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
