FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Medaille Mavericks defeated the Fredonia men's basketball team 95-74 on Saturday.

Fredonia was led by Richard De La Cruz (Washington Heights, N.Y. / Norman Thomas) with 21 points that included five of seven from three-point land. Ian Helps (Bronx, N.Y. / Greater New York Academy) added 13 and a team-high six rebounds, and freshman Tyler Roberts (Rochester, N.Y. / Wheatland-Chili) had 12.

Medaille was led by Miles Newcombe's 27 points. Chris Willingham added 21 points and eight assists. The Mavs shot a stellar 14 of 21 from long range.

The teams played a relatively even first half with Fredonia taking a 42-41 lead into the locker room. Willingham did most of his damage in the first half with 15 points for Medaille. De La Cruz had 10 points at the break for Fredonia.

Medaille owned the second half, outscoring Fredonia 54-32 to claim the victory.

Medaille held a 36-33 edge in rebounding and out shot the Blue Devils 54 percent to 41 percent from the floor. Fredonia was a respectable eight of 18 (44 percent) on three pointers.

Fredonia was 14 of 23 (61 percent) from the charity stripe, while Medaille was 19 of 25 (76 percent).

The hoopsters are back at it on Tuesday when they play host to Alfred University in a womens/mens' doubleheader. The women tip off at 5:30. The men are slated for a 7:30 jump ball.
