Surging relay team highlights day

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia's 200-yard medley relay team was about ten feet behind Nazareth when Sam Rokos (Delanson, N.Y. / Duanesburg) jumped in the pool for the final lap of the race.

Rokos made headway against Nazareth's Brittany Heffler until the two were neck and neck with 25 yards to go. By the end, an observer wouldn't be able to tell who won the head-to-head battle until looking at the scoreboard, which showed the Blue Devils had pulled ahead by just .13 seconds.

The performance by Rokos, Danielle Dembrow (Lockport, N.Y. / Lockport), Taylor Chwalinski (West Seneca, N.Y. / West Seneca West), and Caroline Bilotti (Spring Lake, N.J. / Manasquan) was the highlight of a 181-117

loss to the Golden Flyers on Saturday.

"Nazareth brought out the best in our women today," head coach Arthur Wang said. "The medley relay was really exciting to watch."

Dembrow had a close finish of her own with Heffler, finishing just .05 seconds behind her in the 100-yard breaststroke, and taking second in the 200-yard breastroke (2:36.67).

Rokos claimed three first-place finishes: the 50-yard freestyle (25.05), 200- yard freestyle (2:00.74), and 200-yard individual medley (2:15.37), while Bilotti was second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:07.21).

Freshman diver Julie Coomer (East Aurora, N.Y. / Iroquois) won the first diving event of her career with a 225.00 performance on the 1-meter board. She also finished second in the 3-meter board at 224.95, behind teammate Samantha Kowalewski (Cowlesville, N.Y. / Attica) who took first with a score of 241.80.

The team returns to action on Dec. 4 when the host the Blue Devil Invitational in Steele Hall.
