FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Day 2 of the Fredonia Volleyball Invitational saw the Devils handle Hilbert, 3-0, before dropping a trio of hard-fought sets to SUNY Canton, 3-0.
The Devils defeated Hilbert 25-14, 25-8 and 25-11.
Megan Collins (Burlingham, N.Y. / Pine Bush) had nine kills in 15 attempts for a .600 hitting percentage. Other offensive standouts were
Sara Madison (Rochester, N.Y. / Penfield) with seven kills,
Natalie Berrafato (Williamsville, N.Y. / Williamsville East) with five aces,
Kelly Edinger (Rochester, N.Y. / Greece Athena) with 18 assists, and
Hallie Christopher (East Amherst, N.Y. / Clarence) with 10 assists.
Defensively
Lauren Hokaj (Lancaster, N.Y. / St. Mary's of Lancaster) was credited with 14 digs and
Saverina Chicka (Shelter Island, N.Y. / Shelter Island) had a pair of blocks.
In the final match of the day, Canton got the better of the Blue Devils, 27-25, 25-21 and 25-23.
Kristen Stanek (Hamburg, N.Y. / Orchard Park) -- who was named to the All Tournament Team -- had 10 kills while Collins and Madison added eight apiece. Edinger had 34 assists and 11 digs. Hokaj again led the team with 16 digs.
Ithaca claimed the tournament title going 3-0. They edged out Canton in an epic five-set battle that went in favor of the Bombers 26-24, 25-23, 19-25, 24-26 and 15-10. Canton finished 2-1, Fredonia was 1-2 and Hilbert went 0-3.
Ithaca's Kayla Groman was the MVP, while Joelle Goldstein and Kyle Dandrea joined her on the all-tourney squad. SUNY Canton was represented by Robyn Carroll and Morgan Bills, and Hilbert by Amanda Binder.
The Devils return to Steele Hall on Tuesday to take on non-conference rival Penn State Behrend. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
