FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia's slim chance to make the SUNYAC men's soccer tournament ended with a 3-0 home loss Friday to Oneonta.
Jared Van Brunt, Hans Purtell, and Cory Santangelo had the goals while goalkeeper Vincent Pelligrino made five saves to earn the shutout and lift the Red Dragons to 12-3-1 overall and 7-1-0 in the SUNYAC.
Fredonia goalkeeper
Jeremy Bari (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) made seven saves, including two diving stops during a second-half flurry. The loss dropped the Blue Devils to 2-11-3 overall and 1-5-2 in the conference.
Van Brunt put the Red Dragons on top 1-0 with a header in the 37th minute. The play was set up by a long, sharp-angled free kick into the goal box by Greg Silverstro.
Moments later, the Blue Devils had their best scoring chance.
Joey Vucic (East Aurora, N.Y.) received a through ball from
Bryan Sibble (Liverpool, N.Y.) and fired a shot from the left wing which bent just too high and too wide of the far right upper corner.
Purtell's goal came on a penalty kick in the 59th minute. Santangelo completed the scoring with a one-time chip in front of the net in the 69th minute off a short cross from Dylan Williams.
Fredonia will close out the home portion of its season at 1 p.m. Saturday vs. New Paltz. The team's senior class will be recognized during a pre-game ceremony.
