FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Fredonia women's basketball team fell 73-67 to New Paltz on Friday, snapping a three-game home win streak. The game saw seven lead changes and three ties over the final 13 minutes of play.
Junior
Sabrina Macaulay (Newark, N.Y. / Newark) had her fifth double-double of the season with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Sophomore
Alexis Cheatham (Lockport, N.Y. / Lockport) also had 15 points, while freshman
Jacque Law (Macias, N.Y. / Pioneer) chipped in 14 off the bench. Sophomore
Jamie Curry (Ransomville, N.Y. / Wilson) turned in a 13-point, seven-rebound effort.
New Paltz made the first move early on. Down 4-2, the Hawks went on a 12-2 run to take a 14-6 lead. Their biggest lead of 10 points, 21-11, came halfway through the first frame.
The Devils then responded with a 14-6 run to take a 27-25 advantage – their first lead since the opening minutes. They finished that run scoring the last eight points, the final bucket a three pointer by Cheatham.
Curry finished the half with a three pointer to give Fredonia a 36-30 lead at the break. Macaulay put together a strong half with 13 points and six rebounds. Law added 10 points.
With Fredonia up 43-36 early in the second half, New Paltz ran off 10 straight to regain the lead at the 14:31 mark. From there, the action would pick up in a back-and-forth game with the seven lead changes and three ties. Fredonia's final lead would come at the 5:36 mark, 62-60, after a pair of free throws by Cheatham.
They key basket for the Hawks came in the closing minute. Up two, 67-65 with 48 ticks left to play, Laura Stuart nailed a long-range three to make it a two possession game. Fredonia responded with a layup by Law, but then was forced to foul New Paltz. Kit Small nailed the first two to up the lead to five. A missed three on Fredonia's next possession and one more foul shot by Small accounted for the final score.
All told, 49 fouls were committed in the contest. Fredonia committed a season-high 24, while it was the third time New Paltz had 25 or more fouls. Fredonia went 19 of 29 (66 percent) from the line, and New Paltz was 17 of 25 (68 percent). Fredonia out-rebounded the Hawks 44-40.
New Paltz (9-5 overall, 5-2 SUNYAC) received a big effort by Small, who finished with 20 points. Shannan Walker added 19.
The Blue Devils (6-9, 3-6 SUNYAC) are back in Steele Hall Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. tip off vs. Oneonta. It is also National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Discounted tickets, dozens of raffle prizes and free t-shirts for the first 150 fans highlight the festivities. At halftime, the Fredonia Fire fourth- and fifth-grade team will play a scrimmage.
