Devils, Curry skate to 4-4 tie

MILTON, Mass. -- All the scoring was done in the second period of Fredonia's 4-4 men's college hockey tie Friday with Curry.

The Blue Devils (4-6-4) jumped to a 3-0 lead on goals by Damien Kulynych (Calgary, Alberta), Ryan Wilkinson (Calgary, Alberta), and Hunter Long (Lebanon, Tenn.) in a span of five minutes.

The first came at the 7:49 mark when Kulynych received a pass from Long and took a slap shot that sailed over the shoulder of Curry's netminder Derek Mohney. The second was scored 1:31 later when Marcus Andersson (Örnsköldsvik, Sweden) took possession in the defensive end, turned and fired a perfect pass to Kulynych in the neutral zone, and Kulynych fed Wilkinson and sent him away just as he was crossing the blue line.  At 12:56, Long scored short-handed after he received the puck right in front of the net and stuck it past Mohney. Taylor Bourne (Calgary, Alberta) and Jared Wynia (Calgary, Alberta) were credited with the assists.

Curry's Chris Mason put his team on the board before Kulynych scored his second goal of the night, and third of the season, at 16:41. Curry scored three straight goals -- one each by Jordan Reed, James Murphy, and Tyler Vankleef -- in a span of two minutes to pull the teams even.

The Blue Devils outshot the Colonels, 48-29, including 18-5 in the third period. Mohney registered 44 saves for the Colonels (8-5-2), coached by former Fredonia assistant coach T.J. Manastersky. Christopher Eiserman (Newburyport, Mass) made 25 saves in the Fredonia net.

In the plus-minus category, Long was a team-leading plus three with his one goal and two assists. Kulynych added an assist to finish with three points.

The Blue Devils complete their New England swing with a non-conference game Saturday afternoon vs. Johnson & Wales. The game will be played at the Dunkin Donuts Arena in Providence, R.I.
