Raiders claim title late

BOXSCORE FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia women's soccer team played Mount Union to a scoreless tie until late in the game Saturday night when the Purple Raiders struck twice, claiming a 2-0 victory in the championship game of the 2014 Blue Devil/Clarion Hotel Classic.

In the 73rd minute, Mount Union's Jessica Finkler connected for the game's first goal. The Raiders fired a couple of shots that were blocked and Finkler corraled the ball in a crowd and punched it in from short range.

A minute and a half later, the Purple Raiders capitalized on the momentum swing and scored again. Carolyn Balzano took a crossing pass and connected in the far corner of the net.

The Blue Devils held an 9-6 advantage in shots on goal and both teams had four corner kicks. For most of the game, though, Fredonia controlled the action, holdiong a 22-9 advantage in shots. They outshot the Purple Raiders 12-4 in the first half.

Fredonia's Lindsey Forness made four saves to Maria Favorite's nine for Mount Union. Favorite was named the Tournament's MVP.

Freshman defender Audrey Yokopovich (Webster, N.Y.) and senior midfielder Katie Kleine (Cazenovia, N.Y.) made the all-tournament team from Fredonia. For a complete list of all-tourney team recipients, click HERE.

Mount Union improved to 3-0 while the Devils dropped to1-3 overall. They have the next 10 days to prepare for St. John Fisher. They play host to the Cardinals on Sept. 16 at University Stadium.
