Mount St. Mary beats the weather

9/5/2014 8:10:00 PM

BOXSCORE FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Mount St. Mary broke a scoreless tie just ahead of a severe weather delay Friday during the Blue Devil/Clarion Hotel Classic at University Stadium.

The Knights' Ivan Dorador rocketed a free kick past Blue Devil goalkeeper Sammy Torrelli (Akron, N.Y.) at the 70:50 mark.

One possession later by the Blue Devils, the officials stopped the game with 18:47 remaining as a band of thunderstorms produced lightning over nearby Lake Erie. After a delay lasting until after 10 p.m., the game was terminated and Mount St. Mary (2-0-1) was declared the winner since the game had progressed beyond the 70-minute mark.

The goal by Dorador was the Knights eighth shot of the night, their third on Torrelli. The Blue Devils took six shots, all of them stopped by Mount St. Mary goalkeeper Austin Peluso.

Fredonia came into the game with a 2-0 record and a No. 6 ranking in the NSCAATV.com Division III poll.

In Friday's earlier game, Houghton scored twice in the second half for a 2-0 victory over Buffalo State. Landon Scheaffer and Carlos Peregrina had the goals and Jacob Dunnett made six saves to record the shutout for the Highlanders.

Saturday's games pit Buffalo State vs. Mount St. Mary at 2:30 p.m. and the Blue Devils vs. Houghton at 5 p.m.
