BOXSCORE FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia men's soccer team opened the SUNYAC season with a 1-0 victory over the Geneseo Knights at University Stadium on Friday afternoon.
A second half goal by
Max Prosser (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) broke the scoreless tie in the 74
th minute.
Ryan Ross (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) crossed to
Aaron Hayes (Hamburg, N.Y. /St. Francis), who who chipped the ball to Prosser for his goal of the season and his first game-winner.
The goal came after many narrowly missed chances from both teams through the first 74 minutes of the game. Fredonia goaltender
Sammy Torrelli (Akron, N.Y./Akron) posted a shutout in his first conference game. He made six saves that included many diving and sprawling stops throughout the entire second half to preserve both the 0-0 tie and the 1-0 lead for the Blue Devils.
Geneseo goaltender Logan Calvey matched Torrelli with six saves. The Blue Devils outshot the Knights 11-9.
The win brings the Blue Devils mark up to 6-1 overall, 1-0 in the conference. It is their best start since the 2001 team -- after dropping its opener -- rattled off nine straight wins.
The Knights fell to 3-4-1 overall, 0-1 SUNYAC. Â They were attempting to win their first game in Fredonia since the 2003 season.
Fredonia returns to SUNYAC action at 1 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Brockport.
