Yokopovich's goal gives Devils 1-0 win

BOXSCORE FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The first collegiate goal by freshman defender Audrey Yokopovich (Webster, N.Y.) carred Fredonia over St. John Fisher, 1-0, in women's college soccer Tuesday night.

The scoring play began with a corner kick by Ally Tatro (Fairport, N.Y.), resulting in a scramble for the ball. Positioned in the box amid several teammates and defender, Yokopovich booted a short, high shot under the cross bar behind Fisher goalkeeper Brooke Seavitt.

It was Yokopovich's only shot on goal of the game, and only her second this season. The Blue Devils had seven shots on goal overall.

St. John Fisher managed just five shots overall, and only two got through on Blue Devil goalkeeper Lindsey Forness (Allegany, N.Y.). She stopped both for her second collegiate shutout.

Seavitt was credited with six saves for the Cardinals.

Prior to Yokopovich's goal, the closest the Blue Devils came to scoring was a shot off the cross bar by Katie Kleine (Cazenovia, N.Y.) in the 24th minute.

Later, Seavitt kept the game scoreless with a tough stop of a shot by Tatro. Seavitt also stopped Maria Gordon (Stephentown, N.Y.) and Kristie Kleine (Cazenovia, N.Y.) earlier in the second half prior to the Fredonia goal.

Fredonia has one non-conference game remaining prior to the start of the SUNYAC portion of the schedule. It's Saturday at William Smith, which opened the season ranked No. 1 in the NSCAATV.com NCAA Division III preseason poll. At 3-2 overall, the Herons have fallen out of the national rankings.

Game time Saturday is 1 p.m. in Geneva, N.Y.

Tuesday's loss dropped St. John Fisher to 1-6, including four straight 1-0 losses.
