NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The Fredonia women's volleyball team finished the Hawks Invitational at New Paltz on Saturday, winning against Mount Saint Mary, 3-0, before dropping the final match to New York University, 2-3.

The Blue Devils were in control the entire match against Mount Saint Mary, winning in three sets, 25-7, 25-11 and 25-12.

Kelly Edinger (Rochester, N.Y.) registered 34 assists, while Jessica DiChristopher (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) had 11 kills. Lauren Hokaj (Lancaster, N.Y.) and Paulina Rein (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) were both strong behind the service line, collecting four and three aces respectively.

The Blue Devils then dropped a five set thriller to New York University, 25-18, 16-25, 25-23, 20-25 and 13-15. Megan Collins (Burlingham, N.Y.) had a strong performance with 12 kills and seven digs. Hokaj had 28 digs.

Sara Madison (Rochester, N.Y.) was named to the All-Tournament team for her performance over the weekend.

"I thought there were times when we played really good volleyball and there were times we didn't deal with adversity very well," head coach Geoff Braun said after the match. "Overall, after a 1-3 weekend, we have a lot to build on."

Despite what Braun felt was a good all-round effort from the team in the match, he feels there is much to improve on before the team opens SUNYAC play on September 26th.

"We need to be more consistent across the board," Braun said. "We need to block better. Our floor defense has been very good but we're making it difficult on ourselves at the net. There's a lot to build on with this group and I have a lot of faith in them moving forward."

The Devils, now 6-6 overall, travel to Medaille on Tuesday and have their home opener on Thursday before the first round of conference Pool Play in Oswego in two weeks.
