Devils drop two on Day 1 of '14

BOXSCORE 1 | BOXSCORE 2 CORTLAND, N.Y. -- A pair of 3-0 losses awaited the Fredonia women's volleyball team Friday on the first day of the 2014 season during the Cortland Red Dragon Classic.

The Blue Devils' season opened with a 25-16, 25-21, 25-22 loss to Richard Stockton, followed by a 25-9, 25-17, 25-16 loss to Juniata. The Blue Devils close out their weekend with two more matches Saturday -- 11 a.m. vs. St. Lawrence, 1:30 p.m. vs. Utica.

Sara Madison (Rochester, N.Y.) was the top hitter in each Friday match. The sophomore outside hitter had 11 kills and only one error in 25 attempts vs. Richard Stockton, for a .400 hitting percentage. She had six kills in the Juniata match.

Junior setter Kelly Edinger (Rochester, N.Y.) had 32 assists against Richard Stockton and 16 against Juniata to claim top playmaking honors.

In addition, junior Jessica DiChristopher (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) had eight kills and junior libero Lauren Hokaj (Lancaster, N.Y.) 19 digs vs. Richard Stockton. Freshman libero/defensive specialist Courtney Poirier (West Seneca, N.Y.) had 13 digs and sophomore opposite-outside hitter Megan Collins (Burlingham, N.Y.) two service aces vs. Juniata.
