Ally Tatro, center, scored the Blue Devils first goal of the season in a 3-1 loss Friday to the University of Rochester.
BOXSCORE ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- A first-half goal by junior
Ally Tatro (Fairport, N.Y.) was all Fredonia could muster Friday in its 3-1 season-opening loss to the University of Rochester at the Flower City Classic.
Outshot by the Yellowjackets 13-7, the Blue Devils trailed 1-0 when Tatro scored in the 33rd minute off a rebound. It was the second goal of her collegiate career, his first coming last year during her sophomore season.
The Yellowjackets regained the lead in the 43rd minute and turned aside two good Fredonia scoring chances in the 80th minute. A straight-on shot 12 yards out by senior Katie Kleine (Cazenovia, N.Y.) was tipped wide by the Rochester goalkeeper Aubrey Jaicks, resulting in a Fredonia corner kick. Following the corner, sophomore Alexis Moreland (Newfane, N.Y.) took a shot from the crease toward the lower left post, which Jaicks stopped. The rebound came back to Moreland, and her second shot was also stopped by Jaicks.
The two saves swung the momentum to Rochester, whose Laurie Cowie-Haskell netted her team's third goal -- and completed the scoring -- in the 81st minute. Earlier goals were scored by Lee Stagg and Carolina Manent, with Manent's counting as the game-winner.
Moreland's three shots and two by Kleine led the Blue Devil attack while junior goalkeeper Lindsey Forness (Allegany, N.Y.) made six saves in her collegiate women's soccer debut. Forness participated on the Blue Devil women's softball team last spring. The Blue Devils are back in action Saturday on the second day of the Flower City Classic when they meet Union at 11 a.m.Â
