FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State will look to avenge a regular-season loss to Geneseo when the teams meet Friday afternoon in the semifinals of the SUNYAC women's lacrosse tournament at SUNY Cortland.
Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. while Cortland will meet Oneonta in the other semifinal at 12:30 p.m. Friday. The championship game is scheduled for noon Saturday.
The Blue Devils fell 9-8 when the teams meet April 9 at Geneseo. The game wasn't decided until the final seconds, when Geneseo goalkeeper Laura Passamonte stopped Fredonia's
Marissa Cussins from close range just before time expired.
"We face a very good team in Geneseo," Fredonia State head coach
Chris Case said. "Our first game against them was very exciting."
Geneseo brings a 15-1 record and a No. 8 ranking in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll. The Blue Knights are also No. 2 in the NCAA regional rannkings.
Fredonia State is 11-5 and No. 3 in the region. The Blue Devils dropped from No. 20 to the list of schools "also receiving votes" in the latest IWLCA poll.
"We have been struggling as of late," Case said of his team, which fell to Brockport and Cortland last week. "The week-long practice to regroup has been a good thing for us. We look forward to the opportunity in front of us."
Cortland comes into the tournament as the heavy favorite. The Red Dragons are ranked No. 1 in the region and No. 1 in the IWLCA poll. They also have a history of success, having won 15 straight -- and 16 of 17 -- SUNYAC Tournament titles.
Oneonta advanced to the semifinals with a 13-9 first-round home win Tuesday over Brockport.
