BOXSCORE FREDONIA, N.Y. -- SUNYAC women's lacrosse concluded its regular season Saturday. Fredonia State will be looking for a different result in the conference tournament next Friday.
The Blue Devils were dealt a 14-2 loss by the Cortland Red Dragons on Senior Day at University Stadium. The one-sided final score offered further evidence that the Red Dragons will be the team to beat next weekend, just as they have been in so many other seasons.
The Red Dragons will be hosting the SUNYAC Tournament next Friday and Saturday. They will be looking for their 16th straight SUNYAC championship, while the Blue Devils -- 11-5 overall, 5-3 in the SUNYAC -- will be trying to reach their conference championship game. They will first need to get past Geneseo in the semifinal round. Scheduled game time is 3 p.m.
Kristen Ohberg scored five goals Saturday for Cortland, which entered the week ranked No. 1 in the IWLCA Division III poll. Jessica Lavelle led the defensive effort with five caused turnovers, and goalkeeper Liz Ingalls made five saves. The Red Dragons finished the regular season 8-0 in the conference and 17-0 overall.
Marissa Cussins (Jr.; Corning, N.Y.) scored both Fredonia State goals. The first came with 21:54 left in the second half and cut Cortland's lead to 8-1. Her second goal came with 2:02 left.
Cussins also led the Blue Devils with four draw controls and shared the team lead with
Mary Bruton (Sr.; Palmyra, N.Y.) with two caused turnovers each. Bruton and
Chelsea Maderer (Sr.; Orchard Park, N.Y.) were playing in their final regular-season home game. Thhey were recognized during a pre-game ceremony.
