BOXSCORE 2 BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- Fredonia State bats made very little noise Monday while dropping a SUNYAC softball doubleheader to the Brockport Golden Eagles, 8-0 and 6-2.
The Blue Devils managed just six hits in the doubleheader and trailed 6-0 in the second game before pushing across their only runs of the day. The fell to 8-15 overall and 5-9 in the SUNYAC, while Brockport improved to 19-7 and 8-4.
While the two losses did not mathematically eliminate the Blue Devils from playoff contention, it put a severe dent in their chances. They close out the conference schedule with two doubleheaders this weekend, both on the road -- Friday at New Paltz, and Saturday at Oneonta. Fredonia State may need to win at least three of the four games -- and possibly all four -- to make the six-team tournament field.
To prepare for the weekend, the Blue Devils play a non-conference doubleheader against Houghton starting at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Blue Devil Field.
The first game featured something of an oddity. Both starting pitchers, Emily Kolenda of Brockport and
Alyssa Brognano (Sr.; New Paltz, N.Y.), had to be removed from the game after sustaining injuries. Kolenda and Jaime Berger combined on a two-hitter over five innings. The Golden Eagles scored six times in the last of the fifth to end the game by the eight-run mercy rule.
In the second game, Brockport scored three runs in the first inning and three more in the fifth before the Blue Devils finally broke through with two runs in the top of the sixth. An error, a single by
Jess Lauck (Jr.; Buffalo, N.Y.), and a ground out by
Madeline Medina (Soph.; Hamburg, N.Y.) plated the first run.
Lindsey Forness (Soph.; Olean, N.Y.) followed with an RBI double.
Korey Kibling was the winning pitcher by allowing four hits over the first six innings. Berger pitched one inning of shutout relief.
Kelsey Gannett (Jr.; Endwell, N.Y.) fell to 6-7 with a complete-game loss after pitching 1 1/3 innings in relief in the first game. She combined for nine strikeouts in the two games.
