Devils turn back upset-minded Potsdam in OT

BOXSCORE POTSDAM, N.Y. -- Marissa Cussins (Jr.; Corning, N.Y.) scored the lone overtime goal Saturday to enable Fredonia State to turn aside an upset bid by Potsdam, 12-11, in SUNYAC women's lacrosse.

Cussins scored at the 3:13 mark of the extra period, her fifth goal of the game. She took the subsequent draw control -- one of eight she collected -- and Jessica Tuttle (Soph.; Webster, ,N.Y.) later picked up a ground ball to enable the Blue Devils to run out the clock.

Ranked No. 20 in NCAA Division III by the IWLCA, the Blue Devils improved to 11-3 overall and 5-1 in the SUNYAC. They also locked up a conference playoff spot.

Potsdam fell to 4-9 overall and 0-6 in the SUNYAC.

The Bears scored the last three goals of regulation over the final seven minutes to force the overtime. That erase what earlier had been a five-goal Fredonia State lead.

Katie Glagolev (Jr.; Webster, N.Y.) added four goals whdile Kristie Kleine (Fr.; Cazenovia, N.Y.) had one goal and four assists. Kleine also led the Blue Devils with four ground balls.

Emily Polizzi (Fr.; Rushville) and Sam Owen (Fr.; Horseheads, N.Y.) had one goal each, Mary Bruton (Sr.; Palmyra, N.Y.) caused four turnovers, while four players had three ground balls each: Cussins, Tuttle, Chelsea Maderer (Sr.; Orchard Park, N.Y.), and Juliana Kotas (Soph.; Lancaster, N.Y.). Cussins was also credited eight draw controls and three caused turnovers.

Fredonia State goalkeeper Christina Mathewson (Fr.; Watertown, N.Y.) was credited with 14 saves while her Potsdam counterpart, Jen Chmiel, had 11 saves. Mary Wall led the Potsdam offense with four goals, Bailey Weigel had three goals and one asssit, and Bri McCluskey had two goals and three assists.

The Blue Devils close out their regular season with two home games next week: 4 p.m. Tuesday vs. Brockport, and 1 p.m. Saturday vs. Cortland.
