NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The Fredonia State baseball team defeated New Paltz 2-1 on Friday afternoon. Senior Sean Larson tossed eight strong innings before giving way to fellow senior Kyle Grey, who retired all three batters he faced in the ninth to earn the save. Bobby Frantz, also a senior, provided the offense with a two-run home run in the second inning.

Larson gave up three hits through eight innings before New Paltz broke through with back-to-back doubles to make it a 2-1 game in the ninth. Grey then stepped in and got two infield groundouts before striking out the game's final batter to end the threat.

Freshman Mike Prentice led off the second with a base hit for the Blue Devils. Frantz came to the plate and found himself behind in the count, 0-2. He deposited the next pitch over the left field wall for his first round tripper of the year.

Frantz and Kenny Johnston finished the game with two hits apiece. The Devils out hit the Hawks, 9-5. Larson upped his record to 2-1 on the season. The save was Grey's third.

Andrew Grann (3-3) took the loss on the mound for New Paltz. Stanley  DeLaCruz had two of his team's five hits.

Fredonia improves to 8-9 overall and 3-2 in the SUNYAC. The loss drops New Paltz to 10-16 and 2-8 in the conference. The teams meet in a doubleheader on Saturday to wrap up the series.
