BOXSCORE 2 FT. MYERS, FLA. – The Fredonia State baseball team opened up their SUNYAC play on Thursday against Plattsburgh and split a double header. The Blue Devils dropped game one 3-1 and won the second game 11-0.
Senior pitcher
Steve Sturm (Amherst) tossed a complete game shutout in the 11-0 victory. Sturm picked up his second win of the season scattering five hits over seven innings.
Ciro Frontale (Syracue/Bishop Ludden) went 4-4 in the game with a double.
Ricky Mendiola (Williamsville/Will. South) also added three hits. Both had three RBI.
The Devils scored two runs in the first and two in the second. Mendiola drove in three of the first four runs.
The Devils doubled their lead with a four-run fifth.
Ryan Carmody (Montgomery/Valley) started the rally with an RBI triple. Frontale singled home Carmody. An infield error accounted for the next run, and
Anthony Schiro (Sanborn/Niagara Wheatfield) picked up his second RBI of the game with a bases-loaded walk.
The Devils tacked on three more in the sixth. Frontale roped a two-run single, and Schiro added his second bases-loaded walk.
Kenny Johnston (Buffalo/Kenmore West),
Conner Lorenzo (Rochester/Brighton) and Carmody each had two hits.
Game one saw another complete game from the pitching staff as
Sean Larson (Angola/St. Francis) went nine innings giving up one earned run. Plattsburgh scored one in the first and two in the second, and that's all they would need.
Lorenzo tallied three of the Blue Devils seven hits.
Fredonia State put the tying and go ahead runs on base in the bottom of the ninth. With two out, they strung together three straight singles, but could not finish the rally.
The split puts the team at 5-6 on the year. They will face Plattsburgh (5-8) again Friday at 4 p.m.
