BOXSCORE WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Fredonia State defeated St. Joseph's (Conn.), 14-1, to complete its sweep of three games at SpringFling 2014.
Sam Owen (Horseheads, N.Y.), a freshmen, led the offense with four goals and one assist -- she also collected five ground balls -- while four other Blue Devils had two goals each. Two freshmen goalkeepers,
Jessica Zagari (Rochester, N.Y.) and
Christina Mathewson (Watertown, N.Y.), played 30 minutes each. Mathewson made two saves.
Among the players with two goals was senior
Mary Bruton (Palmyra, N.Y.), normally a defender, who moved to midfield. Bruton also had one assist, five ground balls, and four caused turnovers.
Other with two goals were freshman
Kristie Kleine (Cazenovia, N.Y.), sophomore
Juliana Kotas (Lancaster, N.Y.), and freshman
Emily Polizzi (Rushville, N.Y.). Kotas and senior
Chelsea Maderer (Orchard Park, N.Y.) collected four ground balls each. Also, junior
Marissa Cussins (Elmira, N.Y.) took five draw controls.
In addition, freshman
Erica Tuohey (Hilton, N.Y.) scored her first collegiate goal.
The Blue Devils led 11-0 at halftime and nearly posted the first shutout in team historycame until St. Joseph's Dayna Gambino scored on a free-position shot with 20:44 left in the second half.
The Blue Devils defeated Washington (Md.) and St. Lawrence in two previous SpringFling games. They are back in action Saturday at The College of Wooster.
