Narrow loss to Knox

BOXSCORE FT. MYERS, FLA -- The Fredonia State baseball team faced off against Knox College on Tuesday and lost by a score of 5-4 at the Gene Cusic Classic in Ft. Myers, Florida.

The Blue Devils had the tying run on third with one out in the top of the ninth. Conner Lorenzo (Rochester/Brighton) singled to start the inning. He advanced to second on a wild pitch. A sacrifice bunt moved him to third base. Kenny Johnston (Buffalo/Kenmore West) then lined out to the shortstop. A fly ball to left ended the game.

Lorenzo had a pair of hits on the day along with Johnston, Scott Schuster (Livonia) and Mike Prentice (West Seneca/St. Francis). The Devils out hit Knox, 11-8, but were slowed by four errors, two coming in a three-run second inning.

Carl Wolf (Hilton) got the start for Fredonia State and threw four innings giving up five runs, with two earned. He walked one and struck out two. Tommy Morris (Syosset) and Joey Tingue (South Dayton/Pine Valley) combined for four innings of scoreless relief, striking out five. The duo faced the minimum 12 batters during their outing, which included a pair of double plays.

The loss drops the Blue Devils to 4-5. Knox improves to 2-0.

The Devils have an off day Wednesday, then open up conference play in Florida on Thursday with a doubleheader against Plattsburgh at 10 a.m. .
