Devils roll over St. Lawrence

BOXSCORE DELRAY BEACH, Fla. -- Fredonia State improved to 2-0 during its Florida SpringFling trip with a 12-7 win Friday over St. Lawrence at Seacrest Hilltopper Stadium.

Marissa Cussins (Corning, N.Y.) and Katie Glagolev (Webster, N.Y.) scored four goals each for the Blue Devils, who improved to 2-2 overall and recorded an important regional win over the Saints (1-3).

Katie Kleine (Cazenovia, N.Y.) added three points -- one goal and two assists -- and was the Blue Devils' top field player with four ground balls, three draw controls, and three caused turnovers.

Emily Polizzi (Rushville, N.Y.) added two goals while Jessica Zagari (Rochester, N.Y.) made seven saves in the Fredonia State goal.

Kiera Taussig and Chloe Knapp had two goals each for St. Lawrence.

The Blue Devils never trailed in the game. They took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Kristie Kleine (Cazenovia, N.Y.) on a free-position shot five minutes into the first half.

Glagolev followed with her first of four goals before St. Lawrence broke through. Polizzi then scored twice in a span of five minutes and the Blue Devils never led by fewer than two goals the rest of the game. They were up 8-2 at halftime.

"The trip has been good," Blue Devil head coach Chris Case said. "Our team has played pretty well against two good teams. We definitely have stepped up our play on the defensive end of the field. Our goalie, Jess Zagari, has had two solid games."

Zagari made 10 saves Thursday in a 12-8 win over Washington College, which received votes in the most recent IWLCA NCAA Division III poll. In addition, St. Lawrence received votes in the IWLCA pre-season poll.

Fredonia State was ranked No. 20 in the same preseason poll, yet failed to received votes in the most recent rankings.

The Blue Devils conclude their SpringFling trip when they face St. Joseph's (Conn.) at 11:30 a.m. next Wedneday.
