BOXSCORE NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- A 35-point effort from senior
Tyrone Clark (Elmira/Elmira-Notre Dame) and 26 points from sophomore
Robert Lyles (Peekskill) paced the Fredonia State men's basketball team to a 93-83 win at New Paltz..
John Kovach (Shoreham/Shoreham-Wading River) and
Markus Williams (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) also scored in double digits, turning in 13-point and 11-point efforts, respectively. Kovach added a team-best seven rebounds.
Clark, playing all 40 minutes after playing 45 minutes in an overtime game the night before, found the energy to score 20 points in the first half to get the Devils out to a 42-36 lead. The Devils held the lead the entire half, leading by as many as 11 on two occasions.
For the game, Clark shot 11 of 17 (64 percent) from the field, which included hitting on four of six three-pointers. He was nine of 10 from the line. It was his fifth 30-plus point effort on the season.
Lyles shot seven of 14 from the field and was 12 of 13 from the line. Mix in Williams' seven-for-seven effort from the charity stripe, and the big three combined to go 28 of 30 (93 percent) from the line.
Lyles had five assists and
Alexander Grace (Bemus Point) had four helpers.
For New Paltz (3-11 SUNAYC, 6-16 overall), Taylor Sowah matched Clark's 35 points.
As a team, the Devils shot 52 percent from the field, and outscored New Paltz 31-17 from the free-throw line. New Paltz held a nifty 41-29 advantage in rebounds and hit on 46 percent of its shots. However, the Devils held a lead on the scoreboard for all but 49 seconds. New Paltz held a two-point advantage early in the second half, which also included three ties.
With New Paltz up 52-50 with 15:00 to play, the Devils ran off nine straight points, with Lyles accounting for five of those points. They would never let New Paltz back in the lead.
The Devils (3-11 SUNYAC, 6-15 overall) return home next weekend to play host to Geneseo and Brockport.
