BOXSCORE FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Down one, 62-61, with a half minute to play,
Brittany LaForce (Weedsport) cooly sank both free throws to give Fredonia State the late lead. On the next possession, freshman
Alexis Cheatham (Lockport) connected twice from the line to extend the lead to three. LaForce would hit one more free throw as the Devils claimed a 66-62 victory over visiting Brockport in women's college basketball action on Saturday.
The Devils relied on a balanced offense with four players scoring in double digits.
Becky Hebert (Hilton) led the way with 18, Cheatham and
Jaimie Warren (Lake View/Frontier) had 14 apiece and
Sabrina Macaulay (Newark) finished with her sixth double-double of the season with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
LaForce finished with eight points, three assists and two steals.
As a team, the Devils made 25 trips to the line, connecting 20 times for 80-percent efficiency. Brockport was hobbled by 50 percent shooting (8 of 16) at the charity stripe.
Brockport did have the edge on rebounds, 43-35.
Brockport (4-11 SUNYAC, 8-14 overall) was led by Alexandra Marshall with 18 points. Faith Welch, Kaitlin Hammersley and Bree Fortney all ended with 11 markers. The loss officially eliminated the Golden Eagles from the playoff picture.
The Devils improved to 9-7 in conference play and 14-8 overall.
They wrap up the regular season next weekend at Plattsburgh and Potsdam. Their first-round, post-season opponent is yet to be determined.
