Geneseo slides past Devils

BOXSCORE FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women's basketball team dropped a 66-57 game vs. Geneseo on Friday. The loss gave a blow to the team's hopes of hosting a home playoff game. The team officially clinched a playoff spot, but sit in sixth place. The top six teams make the tournament.

Alexis Cheatham (Lockport) led the Devils with 21 points. Becky Hebert (Hilton) added 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Sabrina Macaulay (Newark) had nine points and eight rebounds. Brittany LaForce (Weedsport) scored eight and led the team with four steals.

Geneseo jumped out to an early lead, 12-3. The Devils battled back and tied the game at 27-all following a three-point play by Cheatham.

The teams then exchanged threes before Geneseo closed the half on a 9-2 run to take a 39-32 lead into the locker room.

Geneseo came into the game with a size advantage, and held a hefty 24-12 rebounding edge at the break. Allison McKenna was credited with three blocked shots in the half, and finished with four. The Devils kept it close by winning the turnover battle with six, compared to Geneseo's 11.

Geneseo held the lead the entire second half. Fredonia State would make it a two-possession game late. Following a free throw by Cheatham, the Devils trailed 63-57 with 36 seconds remaining.

Geneseo then made three out of four three throws down the stretch to account for the final score.

Shannon McGinnis led Geneseo (9-5 SUNYAC, 15-6 overall) with 19 points. Geneseo held a 51-29 advantage on the boards. The Knights also had a hot night from long range, making 10 of 19 three pointers. The Devils were five of 16.

The Devils (8-7, 13-8) wrap up the home portion of their schedule on Saturday vs. Brockport. Tip off is slated for 4 p.m.
