FREDONIA, N.Y. -- For the second straight night, the Fredonia State women's basketball team avenged an early-season conference loss, taking down Oswego, 89-78, after defeating Cortland the night before.
And, as has now become routine lately in Steele Hall, another scoring record was set. Senior
Becky Hebert (Hilton) scored a school-record 44 points. Last weekend saw three different scoring records set, in addition to a 1,000-point scorer reach that milestone.
Hebert, however, was far from a one-woman show. Freshman
Alexis Cheatham (Lockport) routinely found scorers cutting through the lane and finished with 10 assists. Cheatham and senior
Jaimie Warren (Lakeview/Frontier) each had 17 points. Sophomore
Sabrina Macaulay (Newark) grabbed 12 rebounds and had four blocked shots.
Hebert's performance was especially significant, as it came at the expense of her younger sister, Heather, a sophomore at Oswego.
Heather had a fine performance herself, with team highs of 15 points and 11 rebounds, but that paled in comparison to the older sibling.
Hebert set the previous single-game standard of 36 last season. Against, Oswego, she had 29 first-half points en route to the new mark. Hebert did however, fall short of one mark. Last week, Tyrone Clark scored 45 points for the men's team, matching Chris Hughey's 29-year old record for most points by any Blue Devil player.
She upped her conference-leading scoring average to 23.6 points per game.
The win also gave the Devils a boost in the playoff hunt. The Devils, currently in the sixth and final playoff slot, evened their conference mark to 6-6, and improved to 11-7 overall. They had fallen to Oswego 73-60 earlier in the season. The Devils also own a victory over SUNYAC-leading Buffalo State, giving them an advantage in a tiebreaker situation.
In addition to Heather Hebert, Oswego got 15 from Jenn Robbins, 14 from Lauren Nunziato and 11 from Paula Egelston. The Lakers fell to 2-10 in the SUNYAC and 6-13 overall.
The Devils had a significant advantage at the line, converting 20 of 25 free throws compared to Oswego's six of 10. They also outshot the Lakers from the floor, converting 54 percent of their shots compared to Oswego's 39 percent.
The Devils travel to Oneonta and New Paltz next weekend.
