Third-period outburst dooms Devils

GENESEO, N.Y. -- Geneseo did all its scoring in the third period Friday to come away with a 3-0 victory over Fredonia in SUNYAC men's hockey.

Goals by RJ Burns and Connor Anthione off rebounds and an empty-netter by Zachary Martin accouinted for the Geneseo scoring. Nick Horrigan made 31 saves to earn the shutout.

The Blue Devils went 0 for 5 on the power-play, including a 5-on-3 advantage late in the second period.

Jeff Flagler (Owen Sound, Ont.) made the start in the Fredonia net. Like Horrigan, Flagler was credited with 31 saves.

The loss dropped the Blue Devils to 1-4-3 overall and 0-3-2 in the SUNYAC heading into Saturday night's game at Brockport.

Geneseo improved to 6-3-1 overall and 5-3-0 in the conference.

Family reunion

Saturday's trip to Brockport will feature a Meredith family reunion. Blue Devil head coach Jeff Meredith will be going up against his son, Matt, whose a freshman forward for the Golden Eagles. It'll be the first time the Merediths will be on opposite benches.

"I'm really happy with Matt's progression so far this semester," said Brockport coach Brian Dicksinson. "Matt is our hardest working player day in and day out. He makes everyone around him compete harder whether it's on or off the ice. Matt has picked up the systems well and has established himself in a role as a checking line center, who wins most of his faceoffs and is a tireless penalty killer."

Dickinson, once a Blue Devil assistant under Jeff Meredith, says the younger Meredith is well-schooled as a hockey player.

"Matt thinks the game extremely well and is well prepared for all situations on the ice," Dickinson said. "His hard work in the faceoff circle and in the corners battling have led to a couple of big assists. He's a sponge in practice taking all the coaching points in and applying them at his highest level of competitiveness which has allowed him to become a consistent player in our lineup."
