FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia women's soccer season came to an end Saturday in a SUNYAC Tournament shootout with Buffalo State.
After a scoreless double overtime tie, the Bengals converted all five shots to win the right to advance to the semifinal meeting Wednesday at Cortland.
Breanna Knight (Valley Stream, N.Y.), Meghan Allen (Big Flats, N.Y.), Megan Chapple (Utica, N.Y.), Kristin Seiferth (Brightwaters, N.Y.), and Liz Malinowski (Williamsville, N.Y.) made the penalty kicks.
The Blue Devils made three of four tries in the shootout. They did not take the fifth shot since the outcome had already been decided.
Katie Kleine (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia),
Ally Tatro (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport), and
Audrey Yokopovich (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) converted the Fredonia PKs.
Buffalo State goalkeeper Nicole Torres (Wantaugh, N.Y.) made 1-0 saves. Fredonia's
Lindsey Forness (Allegany, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) made five stops.
Fredonia outshot Buffalo State, 20-7, and had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Fredonia's final record was 8-8-2, including a 1-0 win at Buffalo State during the regular season. Buffalo State advances with a 7-7-5 record.
The Blue Devils appeared to win the game during the second overtime when
Alexis Moreland (Newfane, N.Y./Newfane) converted a set piece following a free kick by Yokopovich and a pass from
Jenna Smolinski (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg). The goal was wiped out by a Fredonia offside.
There were few dangerous scoring chances by either team on an afternoon of steady wind, rain, and freezing rain.
The first, best chance came in the first half when
Maggie Horan (Livonia, N.Y./Livonia took a hard strike following a Moreland through ball. Buffalo State's Torres made a leaping, two-handed deflection to send the ball over the net.
Moreland was also involved in Fredonia's next good opportunity. Following a give-and-go with
Kristie Kleine (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia), Moreland took a long shot from outside the 18-yard line and barely missed the top far corner.
Buffalo State's best scoring chance of the first half was a hard strike by Allen from inside the box. Forness made a diving save.
During the second half, Fredonia's best scoring chance was a wide-angled shot by
Kristie Kleine glanced off the far post. Buffalo State's Micky Tinnerman (Salamanca, N.Y.) nearly beat Forness to a loose ball before the Fredonia goalkeeper covered up late in the game.
