FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Fredonia women's volleyball team split its final two matches of the Blue Devil Invitational on Saturday, first defeating Frostburg State, 3-0, and then dropping the final match to RIT, 3-1.
Against Frostburg State, the Devils won by set scores of 25-20, 26-24, and 25-22.
Jessica DiChristopher (Cheektowaga, N.Y./West Seneca East) and
Megan Collins (Burlingham, N.Y./Pine Bush) each had 10 kills while
Lauren Hokaj (Lancaster, N.Y./St. Mary's) had 18 digs.
Against RIT, the Devils were unable to overcome the offensive output of RIT's 2013 All-American outside hitter Sarah Szybist, who finished with 27 kills. Hokaj turned in the top Fredonia performance with 26 digs and three aces. Offensively, DiChristopher collected 12 kills while
Paulina Rein (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) and
Sara Madison (Rochester, N.Y./Penfield) each had 11 kills. Final set scores were 25-21, 26-24, 22-25, and 25-21.
Buffalo State won the two-day Invitational by winning all four of its matches. Jessica Crooks of the Bengals was named tournament most valuable player.
Hokaj, DiChristopher, and Szybist were chosen to the all-tournament team as was RIT's Bethany Davis, Rachele Kelchlin of Buffalo State, and Madelyn Torres of Frostburg State.
The Blue Devils return to the court Tuesday as they travel to Erie, Pa. to take on Penn State-Behrend. Game time is at 7 p.m.
