SUNYAC split puts Devils second

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia women's volleyball team split its final two conference matches on Saturday, falling to Oswego, 3-0, and then downing Geneseo, 3-0.

The Blue Devils looked uncomfortable in the early match against Oswego, falling by set scores of 25-20, 25-16, and 25-9. The Devils generated just 24 kills through the three-set match, 11 by Jessica DiChristopher (Cheektowaga, N.Y./West Seneca East).

The afternoon match pitted Fredonia against Geneseo, with the Devils playing for a chance to clinch a bye in the SUNYAC semifinals.

Shaking off the morning rust, Fredonia rallied to win in three sets, 25-22, 25-23, 25-18. Both outside hitters, Sara Madison (Rochester, N.Y./Penfield) and Kristen Stanek (Hamburg, N.Y./Orchard Park), combined for 21 kills. DiChristopher finished with 12 kills. Paulina Rein (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) led the team defensively with 24 digs.

The Blue Devils finished at 7-2 in the conference -- second to 9-0 New Paltz -- and 20-9 overall.

The second-place finished earned Fredonia a first-round bye and a Nov. 8 date at 3 p.m. against the winner of the Buffalo State vs. Cortland first-round match. The SUNYAC Tournament will be played at New Paltz.
