Devils clinch playoff berth

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Fredonia clinched a spot in the SUNYAC Women's Soccer Tournament with a 3-1 home victory Friday over the Oneonta Red Dragons.

The Blue Devils improved to 4-3-1 in the conference to nail down one of the six playoff berths. They can finish as high as third -- and earn a home playoff game -- with a home win Saturday over New Paltz. Game time is 1 p.m.

Goals by Alexis Moreland (Newfane, N.Y./Newfane), Kristie Kleine (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia), and Katie Kleine (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia) supported the near-flawless defensive effort by the Blue Devils in Friday's decisive win. The Blue Devils improved to 7-7-2 overall.\

The loss dropped the Red Dragons to 4-3-1 -- same as Fredonia -- prior to their Saturday afternoon game at Buffalo State.

The Red Dragons had the better of it in the early going as Kayla Ceschini (Miller Place, N.Y.) and Sarah Glowa (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) created offensive flow, yet with no shots. Play tilted toward the Blue Devils for several minutes thereafter. Using long lead passes to stretch the Oneonta defense, the Blue Devils created a series of scoring chances which led to their first goal.

A high through ball by Ally Tatro (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) sailed over two defenders. Moreland ran the ball down, settled it with her right foot, when deftly right-footed the bouncing ball inside the far post to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute. It was Moreland's fifth goal of the season.

The Blue Devils stayed on the attack for several more minutes, as Moreland and Katie Kleine had excellent scoring chances, neither resulting in a goal. Oneonta regrouped defensively and neither team had another serious scoring chance the rest of the first half.

Oneonta came out with energy in the second half. The Red Dragons got off their first two shots-on-goal of the game and had another good opportunity which Fredonia goalkeeper Lindsey Forness (Allegany, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) caught just as the ball sailed wide of the goalmouth.

The Blue Devils eventually pushed back. Katie Kleine had three chances on one possession, yet came away empty. Oneonta goalkeeper Rori Stark (Brewster, N.Y.) made two saves before Kleine fired a third shot off the outside of the net. Then, a pass by Jenna Smolinski (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) led to a scoring chance by Kristie Kleine before the Kleine-to-Kleine combination clicked for the Blue Devils. Older sister Katie connected with Kristie with a short cross. As Stark came out to challenge again, Kristie sidestepped the goalkeeper and bounced a shot into the net for her sixth goal of the season and a 2-0 Fredonia lead in the 66th minute.

The Blue Devils added to their lead in the 72nd minute. Tatro earned her second assist of the game with a pass out of the midfield to Katie Kleine. As Stark again charged out to defend, Kleine popped the ball over the prone goalkeeper and touched it once more into the open net for her sixth goal of the season.

Oneonta averted the shutout on a goal by Shannen Gillespie (West Islip, N.Y.) with 1:45 remaining. It came on a header off a free kick by Avery Servis (West Hurley, N.Y.), who served a ball into the ball into the box from a wide angle. It was only the seventh overall shot by Oneonta, and their fourth on net. Forness stopped the other three.
