FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia University volleyball team played one of the more exciting matches you will see, and came out victorious over Houghton College on Thursday. The Devils downed the Highlanders 3 sets to 2, with each set being decided by three points or less.
Houghton won the opener, 25-22. The Devils won the next two sets 25-23 and 28-26 before Houghton claimed the fourth set, 26-24. The tiebreaking set went Fredonia's way, 16-14. A season-high crowd of over 200 was on hand to witness the victory.
The Devils improved to 19-7, while Houghton fell to 13-10.
The Devils were paced by
Paulina Rein with 18 kills.
Jessica DiChristopher and
Kristen Stanek had16 kills apiece, and
Sara Madison had 13.
Kelly Edinger racked up 60 assists.
Defensively,
Courtney Poirier had 42 digs and Rein added 31.
Fredonia has now won 13 out of its last 14 matches.
The Devils are off until next Friday when they play host to New Paltz, Oswego and Geneseo in the final round of pool play. Both the Devils and New Paltz enter the weekend with perfect 6-0 conference records, with the winner of their matchup on Friday likely being for the right to host the SUNYAC Champiopnships.
NOTES: Junior setter
Kelly Edinger is just the third Blue Devil in team history to surpass the 3,000-assist mark, a milestone she achieved last weekend during SUNYAC Pool Play at Cortland. Edinger has 3,090 career assists in 336 sets. She trails Fredonia's all-time assists leader Alyssa Torpy with 3,572 in 422 sets (2005-08) and Traci Pieczynski with 3,421 assists in 428 sets (2002-05) … Edinger's  892 assists this season prior to Thursday's match ranked her No. 8 in NCAA Division III and first in the SUNYAC. In addition, her 10.02 assists per match were 27th nationally and No. 1 in the conference … The Blue Devils are in the NCAA Top 100 in 10 team categories, the highest being No. 14 with 1,601 total digs prior to Thursday. Their next-best national ranking is No. 33 in service aces followed by No. 35 in total blocks and No. 39 in digs per set.
