CAZENOVIA, N.Y. -- A late mistake by Cazenovia allowed Fredonia to claim a 2-1 men's college soccer win Wednesday afternoon.
With the teams tied 1-1 in the 86th minute, a Fredonia player crossed the ball into the box. A Cazenovia defender tried to head it out and scored on his own goalkeeper, Brad LeFevre.
The fortunate bounce left the Blue Devils with a 7-1-1 record.
Mike Biggane (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home) opened the scoring early in the first half with a header off a cross into the box by
Vinny Chimento (Akron, N.Y./Akron). It was the second goal of the season for Biggane, and the second assist for Chimento.
Cazenovia scored its goal late in the first half following a corner kick and scrum in the box. Conor Cahalan was credited with the goal, Michael Paquin with the assist.
Michael Schreiner (Spencerport, N.Y./Spencerport) made his first 2014 start in goal for the Blue Devils. He made four saves and lifted his career record to 9-11-1.
Fredonia head coach
P.J. Gondek said his team was unable to take advantage of scoring chances in each half. The Blue Devils outshot Cazenovia 18-11, including 8-5 in shots-on-goal. The Blue Devils were also awarded nine corner kicks, Cazenovia just four.
"We could not find the back of net," Gondek said. "It a way, we were lucky. It would be pretty disappointing if we were here sitting with a loss. We have a lot of young players and I don't think they saw the danger even when it was 1-1."
The Blue Devils are back in action Saturday when they face Buffalo State at 1 p.m. in University Stadium. It'll mark the first home event of the "Battle by the Lake" multi-sport series with the Bengals.
