BOXSCORE FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Seniors
Becky Hebert (Hilton) and
Jaimie Warren (Lakeview/Frontier) powered the Fredonia State women's basketball team to a 76-66 win over visiting Cortland State on Friday.
Hebert, the SUNYAC's leading scorer, turned in a 28-point effort while classmate Warren got her third double-double in four games with 19 points and 13 rebounds. It was her fifth-straight game with 10-plus rebounds. Freshman
Alexis Cheatham (Lockport) also continued her strong play with 16 points, including eight during a 14-0 run as the Devils took control of the game late in the first half. Cheatham added six assists.
The teams played even basketball in the early going. Cortland took an 11-9 lead at the 15-minute mark following a layup by Grace Williamson. Cortland went on to build its biggest lead of the game, 27-15, with 7:44 to play.
From there, the Devils would score the next 14 points, with Cheatham nailing a pair of three-point baskets and an acrobatic, floating layup as the shot clock was about to expire during the run. Hebert added six points over that same spurt.
Following a three-pointer by Megan Toughey, the Devils scored the final four points of the half to take a 33-30 lead into the break.
The Devils would not surrender the lead the rest of the way, outscoring Cortland 43-36 in the second half.
The Red Dragons were led by Toughey with 19 points and Williamson with 14.
Cortland had a 46-44 rebounding edge and both teams had 13 assists, 13 turnovers and three blocks. The Devils out-pointed Cortland from the free-throw line, 17-9, and converted 46 percent from the field compared to 34 percent for the Dragons.
The win avenged an 82-75 road loss back on Jan. 11. The Devils improved to 10-7 overall and 5-6 in SUNYAC play. Cortland fell to 11-7 and 7-4 in conference play.
Tomorrow afternoon the Fredonia State women welcome the Oswego Lakers to Steele Hall for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
