BOXSCORE FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Goals by
Frankie Hart (Timmins, Ont.) and
Erik Moberg (Sundsvall, Sweden) and 25 saves by
Jeff Flagler (Owen Sound, Ont.) carried Fredonia State to a 2-0 home win over the Morrisville State Mustangs in SUNYAC men's hockey.
For Moberg, a freshman, it was his first collegiate goal, while it was the second collegiate shutout for Flagler, also a freshman. It was Hart's third goal; he, too, is a freshman.
The Blue Devils improved to 3-4-3 in the SUNYAC and 6-9-4 overall, while the Mustangs fell to 2-8-1 in the SUNYAC and 5-12-2 overall.
The same two teams meet 7 p.m. Saturday in the annual Pink The Rink game at Steele Hall Ice Arena.
After a scoreless first period, Hart connected from down low near the faceoff circle to the right of Mustang goaltender Jakob Rasmussen at 2:07 of the second period.
Chad Bennett (Burlington, Ont.) was credited with an assist on Hart's goal, which turned out to be the game-winner.
Fredonia State played with fire during the second period by taking four minor penalties against a Morrisville State power play which was clicking at 30 percent proficiency, yet managed to kill off all four. The Blue Devils were five of five on the penalty kill overall.
Moberg's insurance goal came on a power play at 9:53 of the third period.
Blake Forslund (Owen Sound, Ont.) passed to
Hunter Long (Lebanon, Tenn.), whose shot from the right faceoff circle was stopped by Rasmussen. Moberg gathered the rebound and scored from the slot.
Flagler was chosen as the No. 1 star, Hart as No. 2, and Moberg as No. 3. Just missing out on the stars was senior forward
Andrew Christ (Spokane, Wash.), who put a strong effort in at both ends of the ice.
