Bengals hold off Devils, 81-74

BOXSCORE FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Buffalo State men's basketball team was able to hold of a pesky Fredonia State squad, 81-74, in SUNYAC action Saturday at Steele Hall. The Devils pulled within four points in the final minutes before bowing out to the Bengals.

Senior Tyrone Clark (Elmira/Elmira Free) led all scorers with 24 points. Sophomore Eric Zwierlein (Nichols/Tioga) netted 21, including five of seven from beyond the arc. Fellow sophomore Robert Lyles (Peekskill) chipped in 16 points and three assists.

Buffalo State was led by Justin Mitchell with 20 points.

The Blue Devils built the early lead and led by as many as nine in the first half. Following a layup by Zwierlein, the Devils were up 19-10. Buffalo State eventually overtook the Devils and held a 39-34 lead at the half.

The Devils pulled within one, 49-48, midway through the second half, but would never muster a lead.

A layup by Markus Williams (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) with 1:28 left to play brought the Devils to within four, 76-72.

The Devils shot 51 percent from the field (27 of 53), compared to the Bengal's 47 percent (27 of 58). Buff State held a 35-25 advantage on the boards.

The Devils travel to Geneseo on Tuesday before returning to Steele Hall next Friday/Saturday.
