Red Dragons slip past Devils

BOXSCORE CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Tied 68-all with just over three minutes to play, the Fredonia State women's basketball team could not hold on, falling to Cortland, 82-75, on Saturday.

The Devils mounted their biggest lead of the game, 59-49, following a Sabrina Macaulay (Newark) layup with 12:32 left to play in the second half. After two more lead changes and two more ties, Cortland took the lead for good with 2:42 remaining on a jumper by Grace Williamson to make it 70-68.

Fredonia State senior Becky Hebert (Hilton) led all scorers with 29 points, including four three-pointers. Fellow senior Jaimie Warren (Lake View/Frontier) added 19 points and eight rebounds. Macaulay finished with nine points and 14 boards. Freshman point guard Alexis Cheatham (Lockport) dished our eight assists and had nine points.

Cortland (8-4 overall, 4-1 SUNYAC) was paced by Megan Toughy with 27 points. Caysea Cohen added 20.

Both teams nailed 10 three pointers, and combined for 59 trips to the free throw line. The Devils shot 21 of 27 (78 percent) from the charity stripe, while Cortland was 18 of 32 (56 percent).

The Devils held a 43-30 advantage in rebounds, but lost the turnover battle, 23-12. Each team had 19 assists.

The Devils (6-4, 1-3) play at Brockport on Tuesday.
