BOXSCORE FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Neumann broke a scoreless tie late in the third period and held on to defeat Fredonia State, 1-0, in non-conference men's hockey Friday at the Steele Hall Ice Arena.

In a game dominated by the two goalkeepers, Neumann's Shayne Morrissey scored his ninth goal of the season with 1:54 remaining in the third period to account for the only goal. Stationed to the left of the crease, he chipped in a rebound after Fredonia State freshman Jeff Flagler (Owen Sound, Ont.) made the initial save on a shot from the right wing.

Collin O'Neil and Casey Rogers were credited with assists.

Flagler was making only his second start of the season and stood tall with 44 saves. His counterpart, Neumann junior Ben Curley, earned the shutout -- his second as a collegian -- with 38 saves.

The final score was not indicative of the speed of play as both teams put together good stretches in their offensive ends, resulting in several scoring chances, yet both goaltenders had solid games.

The loss dropped the Blue Devils to 2-7-2 overall, while the Knights improved to 6-4-3. The two teams are back in action 3 p.m. Saturday at the Steele Hall Ice Arena.
