Five-set success over Rochester

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Fredonia State emerged with a 3-2 in-region win over the University of Rochester on the second day the season-opening Cortland Red Dragon Classic.

The teams took turns winning sets, with Rochester winning the first and third sets (25-22, 25-17), and the Blue Devils the second and fourth (25-12, 25-18). The Blue Devils closed out the match by winning the fifth set, 15-7. Fredonia State had 11 kills and only error in the fifth set.

Paulina Rein and Kaitlin Orcutt led the attack with 11 kills each in the match, with Rein hitting .303 with only one error. Kelly Edinger collected 41 assists. Sara Madison and Jessica DiChristopher had eight kills each. Brianne Paganello led the Blue Devils with four services aces, and Rein had three.

Defensively, Brittney Kelly had 20 digs, Rein had 12, and Lauren O'Hara 11, while DiChristopher had four total blocks, and Edinger had three.

In a Saturday morning match, Fredonia State fell to Lebanon Valley by scores of 25-20, 25-22, and 25-19.

The Blue Devils had 22 kills against 21 attack errors, with Rein and Orcutt collecting six kills each. Edinger had 17 assists, and contributed defensively with seven digs. O'Hara and Madison had nine digs each, while Rein and Kelly had eight each. Kelly also had three service aces. Hannah Manning had two total blocks.

Madison was named to the all-tournament team.
