BOXSCORE

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Fredonia State women's soccer dropped its season opener Saturday, 2-0, to Christopher Newport at Virginia Wesleyan's Marlins Classic.

Emma O'Reilly scored both goals for the Captains, who outshot the Blue Devils 23-4.

Christopher Newport came out quickly and jumped to a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute as O'Reilly ran down the left side and took a pass in stride from Bupe Okeowo to beat Fredonia State freshman goalkeeper Hannah McGlinchey.

Jenna Smolinski took Fredonia State's first shot of the season at 24:07 (it was blocked) before Maria Green followed with a shot which sailed wide. Those two shots in a span of 14 seconds represented all the Blue Devil offense in the first half. Yet they only trailed 1-0 thanks to six saves by McGlinchey.

O'Reilly doubled the margin with a five-yard shot to the right of McGlinchey in the 61st minute.

McGlinchey finished with 11 saves in her collegiate debut. Green had two shots for the Blue Devils. Christopher Newport goalkeeper Haley Casanova made one save to earn the shutout.

The Blue Devils meet host Virginia Wesleyan at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Marlins, ranked nationally in two pre-season polls, tied Meredith (N.C.) in Saturday's first game.
